Slave Market
Although best known today for its scenic views and breath-taking natural beauty, Zanzibar has a dark history when it comes to slave trade. The Slave market takes us back in time with an informative guided tour. This place has a dark storied past with underground chambers where more than 50,000 slaves were prisoned and whipped until auction day. The former whipping tree is marked at the altar by a white marble circle surrounded by red to symbolise the blood of the slaves. The Anglican Cathedral Church of Christ stands at the site now, as a symbol of peace.
